Serigne Mbaye THIAM, Minister of National Education of Senegal, was elected Vice Chair by the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership of Education (GPE) in May 2018. He first joined GPE as a Board member representing the Africa 2 constituency, which includes 18 francophone countries, between 2013 and December 2014, and Chair of the Governance, Ethics, Risks and finance committee between February 2014 and December 2015.

Minister THIAM has held numerous positions in Senegal since 1996, including Deputy and Minister of Higher Education and Research; he recently implemented new technologies in the learning process in Senegal (SIMEN), which is a revolution in the education system in Africa. Minister THIAM has also extensively worked in the private sector, consulting, accounting and corporate finance and served as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer at the Autonomous Port of Dakar between 1987 and 1998. Minister THIAM is also the President of UNESCO’s National Commission for Senegal and represents his country on the UNESCO’s Executive board.

In his capacity of Vice Chair, Minister THIAM will assist the Chair to manage the governance of GPE and will be a counselor to both the Chair and CEO.
