BRIANKENNETHResponsible for all curriculum issues in the Western Cape Education Department in South Africa, the WCED Literacy and Numeracy Strategy and e-Learning and all assessment issues (including oversight of the national senior certificate examinations, ABET (Adult) examinations and other assessments), as well as Teacher Development and In-service Training.

He is responsible for the WCED e-Vision and the roll-out of e-Learning and e-Teaching in Western Cape schools over the next few years. He leads the western Cape government’s eLearning game Changer which aims to connect all schools to fast broadband, install WiFi LANs in all schools, classroom-based teaching technology and learner devices for all learners.

His qualifications: B.Sc with majors in Physics and Chemistry, SOD (Cum Laude) (teachers’ diploma), B.Ed and M.Ed. He is an author of Physical Science, Natural Science and Technology textbooks over a period of more than 25.

He has served and still serves on various Boards, including SAFCERT, UMALUSI (The National Quality Assurance Body for all school leaving qualifications) and the Interactive Science Foundation (Chairman) which governs the Cape Town Science Centre. He has recently been appointed to the New York-based Global Education Partnerships Council of Advisors.

His experience includes Physical Science teacher (17 years), Principal (transforming the school from poor-performing to top performing school, Superintendent of Education, Area Manager (Wynberg Education District), Director: Curriculum, Chief Director: Education Planning, Deputy Director-General: Education Planning and Development and currently Deputy Director-General: Curriculum and Assessment Management.

He has recently been invited to:
• Serve as an international judge in the Microsoft Global Teachers Awards in Barcelona, Spain (March 2014)
• Attend the Global Education & Skills Forum (GESF) in Dubai (March 2015)
• Attend the Global Education Leaders Partnership (GELP) Conference in South Africa (April 2015)

He is an avid sportsman, having played 1st team rugby, cricket and tennis at school. He continued to play league cricket and tennis competitively for many years and is now a keen golfer (playing occasionally as time permits!).
